IntroComp Committee


IFTF’s IntroComp Committee oversees the operation of the annual IntroComp competition. IntroComp provides an annual venue for authors to test narrative concepts, mechanics, and storylines for interactive fiction, gain feedback from audience reactions, and use that feedback for a potential future interactive fiction release.

IntroComp was conceived by Neil deMause in 2002. It was stewarded by Jacqueline A. Lott from 2003-2017 and by Xalavier Nelson from 2017-2021. In 2023 the IFTF assumed oversight for IntroComp with Eric W. Brown (Feneric) as its new steward.


The Committee shall be granted all powers granted to the Board of Directors relevant to these operations except:

  1. Those that are specifically denied under the IFTF Bylaws.
  2. The sale or purchase of assets worth greater than $500 per calendar year.
  3. Borrowing money or assuming any long term liabilities.
  4. Entering into any contracts or agreements worth more than $5,000 in total per calendar year.

The Committee shall be restricted to only those activities that are consistent with IFTF’s tax exempt status.


The Committee shall support the following specific tasks:

  1. Maintaining and improving the IntroComp web site
  2. Evaluating rule changes or adjustments to the competition schedule
  3. Overseeing the judging process and the tallying of ballots
  4. Managing communication with IntroComp participants (entrants and judges)
  5. Promoting the competition for new audiences
  6. Maintaining the competition’s historical records
  7. Operating the competition’s social media presence
  8. Managing press releases other media contacts

The IFTF Board of Directors may add or remove tasks from time to time.


The Committee shall consist of at least one and at most nineteen members. The Committee shall ensure adequate membership to carry out the tasks specified in the section titled “Responsibilities”.

Members shall serve for 1 year terms. There shall be no limit to the number of terms any member may serve.

One person shall be appointed the IntroComp Committee Chair and will coordinate the activities of the other members. The Chair will be responsible for reporting activities to the Board of Directors. Furthermore, the Chair will serve as the nominal organizer of the Competition, acting as its principal public face.

The initial membership of the Committee shall be appointed by the Board of Directors. Thereafter, members of the Committee shall be elected by a majority vote of the Committee. Any member can be removed by a majority vote of the Committee. At any time, a member can be added, removed, or replaced by the Board of Directors. In the event of the death, resignation, or removal of a member, the Committee shall elect a new member.


The committee must meet at least once per year. Meetings may be held through any mutually agreed-upon channel. The Committee shall provide a report of all recent operations at least once every three months.


The Committee shall serve until dissolved by the board of directors.
